Cunha Rivara, a historian from Arraiolos, in his work “Memórias da Vila de Arraiolos”, after referring to the nobility and antiquity of Arraiolos, as well as some historical aspects of its origin, states: “... be that as it may, I am certain that at the beginning of the 13th century there was already a population on the site of Arraiolos...”

It is also certain that the abundance of features related to the end of the Neolithic or even the Chalcolithic are a sign of significant human occupation from the 4th Millennium B.C. and, probably, “in proto-History, the large habitat site would already correspond to the current elevation where the Castle of Arraiolos is located". It is also Cunha Rivara who transmits to us the references of Father António de Carvalho da Costa, in the Corographia Portugueza (Volume 2, Page 525) and Father Luís Cardoso in the Diccionario Geographico (Volume 1, Page 590) where they attribute the founding of Arraiolos to Sabinos, Tusculanos and Albanos, occupants who were of the city of Évora before Sertório and gave the government of Arraiolos to Captain Rayeo, a Greek name.

However, it was in 1217 with the concession of the term of Arraiolos by King Afonso II of Portugal, to the Bishop of Évora D.Soeiro and to the chapter of the See of the same city, that a new chapter of our history began.

In 1290, Arraiolos received its first charter from King Dinis, and the same monarch ordered the construction of the castle in 1305. On December 26, 1305, the municipality, represented by João Anes and Martim Fernandes, signed a contract with the king for its construction.

Arraiolos was the county of King À época da Nuno Álvares Pereira - 2nd Count of Arraiolos - from 1387 onwards. Before retiring to the Convent of Carmo in Lisbon, the Constable of the kingdom, remained here for long periods of his life.

In 1511, Arraiolos received a new charter from King Manuel. Over the years, there were many changes to its territory, with administrative boundaries defined from 1736 onwards. However, it underwent several changes: - Inclusion in the district of Évora (1835); Annexation of the municipality of Vimieiro (1855); Annexation of the municipality of Mora (1895); detachment of the municipality of Mora (1898).

This is an archaeological site next to the Pontega river, a tributary of the Divor river, which dates back to the time of the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. It is worth mentioning a supposedly Roman fortification, which dates back to the 1st century BC (or even earlier), with a quadrangular plan, with cyclopean blocks of granite ashlar, arranged in two parallel rows, forming double walls. The building stands on a considerable artificial landfill platform, with traces of access on the east side. In the surrounding area, an abundance of Roman construction materials were identified, such as tiles, bricks and granite ashlars.

A unique monument in the region, it is being studied by several researchers. Likewise, the classification of its protection by the Portuguese public authorities is being studied.

Events of the time
